PCC Rock Creek Choirs to Perform Folk Mass in Two Performances

The Portland Community College Rock Creek Choirs and the Pacific University Choir, directed by Samuel Barbara, will present the ground-breaking choral piece Misa Criolla in a festive celebration of Hispanic music. The Misa Criolla, composed in 1964, was scored for traditional instruments and was based on folk genres such as chacarera and carnavaltio. Ariel Ramírez’s most famous work, it brought the composer international recognition and is “widely regarded as a stunning artistic achievement,” according to the Washington Post. The mass was among the first in a modern language to be approved for performance in the Catholic Church by the Vatican Council.

Performances will be held Saturday, May 4, 7:30 pm in Taylor Meade (McCready) Hall at Pacific University, 2014 Cedar Street in Forest Grove, and Sunday, May 5, 3pm at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 475 SE 3rd Avenue in Hillsboro. A $10 suggested donation will be collected at the door.

For more information about the performances, please contact Samuel Barbara at Samuel.barbara@pcc.edu or 971-722-7867.
