Job Summary
Under the direction of the Department Director manages the day-to-day operations of assigned functional area within the Library. Participates in the development, recommendation, and administration of policies, procedures and processes in support of assigned functional area within the Library. Responds to inquiries from College departments, the community, and/or external agencies and supervises administrative services professionals, technical/support staff, and/or student workers.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Library Services Manager carries out operating policies and procedures with a focus in one functional area such as technical or circulation services.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Plans, organizes, maintains, and manages the processes and operations of an assigned Library program. Manages the activities of assigned program area to include: planning, implementing, administering and evaluating projects and services impacting Library operations.
- Supervises administrative services professionals, technical/support staff, and student workers. Hires, evaluates, trains, disciplines and recommends dismissal of staff as necessary.
- Develops, recommends, and administers policies, procedures, and processes in support of library operations in assigned area of responsibility; implements and monitors compliance with approved policies, procedures, and processes.
- Manages and administers assigned modules within the automated library system(s).
- Participates in/on a variety of meetings, committees, consortia, and/or other related groups to communicate information regarding services, information resources, continuing education opportunities, and/or other pertinent information as appropriate.
- Serves as a liaison with other departments and students within the College in order to provide information on available resources and/or services.
- Positions in this classification may perform all or some of the responsibilities above and all positions perform other related duties as assigned.
Position-Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Library Technology
Positions assigned to Library Technology may also be responsible for:
- Serving as the Library’s cataloguer, which includes cataloguing records, audiovisual materials, telecourse videos, and/or other applicable items.
- Maintaining and improving library database, other library computer applications, and workflow within the Library’s technical services area, which includes coordinating with appropriate Library staff on issues related to deleting and loading records for e-books, ensuring electronic resources are accessible, monitoring the merging of information into shared databases, configuring and reconfiguring data from electronic systems, and working with technical staff to move materials in and out of the system as efficiently as possible.
- Participating in collection development activities.
- Providing assistance to patrons at the reference desk.
Library Circulation
Positions assigned to Circulation may also be responsible for:
- Administering the automated checking in and out of Library materials, inventory control, patron charges, and accounts receivables.
- Managing the operations for assigned libraries, which includes overseeing building maintenance, repair and replacement activities to ensure applicable safety standards are met.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited institution. Three years progressively responsible experience related to area of assignment, including two years of supervisory experience.
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of:
- Supervisory principles;
- Library science principles and practices;
- Library cataloguing principles and practices;
- Library circulation principles and practices;
- Integrated library systems;
- Automated library database systems.
Skills in:
- Supervising subordinate staff;
- Coordinating activities with other internal departments and/or external agencies;
- Preparing a variety of reports related to operational activities, including statistical analysis;
- Developing, recommending, implementing, and monitoring policies, procedures, and work flow;
- Working with diverse academic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff;
- Utilizing computer technology used for communication, data gathering and reporting;
- Communicating effectively through oral and written mediums.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Work is generally performed in an office environment with frequent interruptions and irregularities in the work schedule. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, may be required to lift up to 50 pounds. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily.
