The U.S. Department of Education says, “International Education: Advancing Access for All,” celebrates the importance of global competency and education as a critical civil right, and recognizes 2015 as the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the 50th anniversary of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

Monday
  • Discover PCC: ELL High School Student Visit and Tour: Rock Creek Event Center, 10am-1pm
    Facilitated by Orientation and Outreach
  • Kumu Hina Documentary Showing and Discussion: Rock Creek TLC 7-116, 12-2pm
    Co-sponsored by the Queer Resource Center for Transgender Awareness Week. This documentary shares the story of a transgender native Hawaiian teacher who inspires a young girl to fulfill her dream of leading the school’s male hula troupe.
  • Intercultural Communication Workshop: Sylvania CC Tree Rooms, 12-1pm
    Facilitated by Associated Students of Portland Community College. What does culture mean to us? What are the values that you have and how do they influence your communication style? This workshop is to experience intercultural communication and to learn the way to communicate.
  • Weddings Around the World Event: Rock Creek WRC, 3:30-5pm
    Facilitated by Women’s Resource Center. Come learn about wedding traditions from many different countries and cultures from around the world! Free henna tattoos and food provided!
  • How to be a Successful International Student in College: Sylvania CC Tree Rooms, 1:30-3pm
    Facilitated by Student Learning Center. This workshop will be led by a current International Student Ambassador and Orientation Leader working in the Student Learning Center, Huy Le. Huy will provide information about volunteer and job opportunities at PCC, how to get involved in college, helpful tips and strategies in preparing for tests, and more. International students must get involved in campus life – come and learn how to do it! Guest speakers will include Ron Noble (Student Learning Center Coordinator and Math Instructor) and Elise McClain (ESOL Instructor). Free to attend and refreshments will be provided.

  • CIEE Passport Event and international tables: Sylvania PAC Lobby, 9am-4pm
    Facilitated by Education Abroad and Internationalization Steering Committee. Through our partnership with the Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE), 50 PCC students will receive FREE passports during our International Education Week. Only students who have pre-registered will receive a passport. Join us for this free event, international tables, music, and food!
  • International Travel Exchange: Southeast Mt. Tabor Hall 148, 10-11am
    Facilitated by WRC and Career Exploration Center. This event is an opportunity for students to sharing their travel stories in Oregon, learn from others about how to get engaged in American life, hang out, and make new friends. We hope this will also help students overcome cultural shock and feel a sense of belonging at school. Free to attend and refreshments provided.
  • Social Justice for Students Workshop Part 1: Rock Creek Multicultural Center, 12-1pm
    Facilitated by ASPCC. ASPCC Clubhouse Coordinator, Ben Nzowo, will lead a discussion on the importance of context and content, and ways to make communities more inclusive. Free to attend and refreshments provided.
  • Speed Culturing: Japanese and ESOL classes: Rock Creek Event Center, 1:30-3pm
    Facilitated by Instructors Cynthia Thornburgh and Morgan Lindberg. ESOL 254 Level 7 Communication Students will participate in cultural exchange conversations with Japanese 101 students.

  • International Extravaganza: Cascade Student Union 2nd floor lobby, 11am-1pm
    Facilitated by ASPCC. Sample foods from around the world! Meet other students, listen to music, and enjoy a free international experience at PCC!
  • Cultural Table Showcase: Cascade Student Union 2nd floor lobby, 11am-1pm
    Facilitated by WRC. A table for international resources will also be available, where students can ask questions, discuss problems they face as international students at PCC, and find resources and support to help them. Free to attend.
  • Chimamanda Adichie Ted Talk Showing and Discussion: Rock Creek OIE (3, 223), 11am-12pm
    Facilitated by WRC and OIE. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a renowned Nigerian novelist born in Nigeria in 1977. She moved to the United States to attend college where she has earned a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees. Come listen to Chimamanda’s ground-breaking TEDx Talk “We Should All Be Feminists” which boasts over 2 million views on YouTube, and participate in a discussion after. Free to attend and refreshments will be provided.
  • My Country: Rock Creek Building 3 Mall, 11am-2pm
    Facilitated by ASPCC. Participate in a free Around the World Tour of tables with information about many different countries. PCC international students are from all over the world – come learn about their cultures!
  • Social Justice for Students Workshop Part 2: Rock Creek Multicultural Center, 11am-12pm
    Facilitated by ASPCC. Cat Hoang, ASPCC Recreation Coordinator, will lead a discussion about social justice and international students. Free to attend and refreshments provided.
  • Islamic Roots Movie Screening and Discussion: Rock Creek Multicultural Center, 12:30-2pm
    Facilitated by Muslims of Rock Creek Club. Explore the roots of Islam with the Muslims of Rock Creek Club. Learn about how Islam started, why Islam is relevant in today’s society, and more about the man with 1.5 billion followers today. Free to attend and refreshments provided.
  • A Time and Culture to Remember: Cascade SU 204, 1-3pm
    Facilitated by WRC. Students will display their cultural outfits and talk about why and when they wear them. Participants will be able to answer related questions and win prizes. Free to attend.
  • Understanding Diversity in Communication: Rock Creek Multicultural Center (7, 118), 4-5pm
    Facilitated by Multicultural Center. Participate and have fun in a dynamic activity where students, staff, and faculty will be able to understand the importance of communication in a diverse world! Free to attend and refreshments will be provided.
  • International Student Scholarship Workshop: Rock Creek Location TBD, 5-6pm
    Facilitated by Career Exploration Center and Phi Theta Kappa. Scholarships for international students are hard to find! Come to this information session to learn how to find these scholarships and talk with other international students about the process of applying for them.
  • Social Justice Workshop: “Creating Inclusive, Socially Just Campus Environments: An Intensive Equity and Inclusion Retreat for Campus Leaders”: Rock Creek Event Center, 8:30am-4:30pm
    Facilitated by Office of Equity and Inclusion
Thursday
  • International Tea Ceremony: Southeast Tabor Hall, Great Hall, 11:30am-2pm
    Facilitated by ASPCC. The International Tea Ceremony will bring together the campus community to celebrate Southeast’s diverse culture by sharing ceremonial tea traditions from various countries. Free to attend and refreshments provided.
  • Social Justice Workshop: “Creating Inclusive, Socially Just Campus Environments: An Intensive Equity and Inclusion Retreat for Campus Leaders”: Rock Creek Event Center, 8:30am-4:30pm

  • Talent and Fashion Show: Sylvania CT Building Little Theater, 12-1:30pm
    Facilitated by ESOL Program. Come to this showcase of PCC’s international and ESOL students and see our talented singers, dancers, and other performers! Tickets are $2 (suggested donation) and are available in the ESOL Tutoring Center at Sylvania (CT 208)
  • International Student Scholarship Workshop: Rock Creek Location TBD, 3-5pm
    Facilitated by Career Exploration Center and Phi Theta Kappa. Scholarships for international students are hard to find! Come to this information session to learn how to find these scholarships and talk with other international students about the process of applying for them.
  • International Celebration Fundraiser: Rock Creek Event Center, 5-8:30pm
    Facilitated by OIE

    • The culmination event of International Education Week! Enjoy dinner, a Japanese dance performance, a panel of international students speaking about stereotypes, a DJ and dancing, and more!
    • Tickets on sale November 12th at all OIE locations (Cascade: SU 308, Rock Creek: 3-223, Sylvania: CT 103) – $5 for PCC students and children under 12, $10 for all others
    • $5 from every ticket will be donated to the PCC International Student Emergency Fund
    • Please note: This event is different than the International Dinner has been in past years. This event will focus more on PCC’s international student experience with a panel on stereotypes and not as many activities for folks to do. There will still be food, student performances, a DJ and some dancing – lots of fun! It just may not be a good fit for children this year.
All week
  • Photo Contest: submit photos from any country outside the US! Special consideration will be given to those that incorporate the International Education Week theme, Advancing Access for All. Prizes will be given to the most creative and most original, and winning photos will be printed and placed on tables during International Celebration. Photos should be emailed to oie.activities@pcc.edu by 5pm on Thursday, November 19.
  • International Display and Table: Sylvania Lower Mall
    Facilitated by ASPCC, Student Learning Center, and WRC. Learn about women’s education around the world and talk to an international student about what it’s like to be an international student at PCC.
