Location or Language-Specific Scholarships

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships (also known as NSEP scholarships) are available for undergraduate and graduate study in countries of priority to US. national security, largely focusing on the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Note that Boren awards include a service obligation. Approximately 150 awards each year.

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must be enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before and during the time they are studying abroad.

Critical Language Scholarships Fully-funded (airfare, room and board, cultural activities, academic credit) study at designated 7-10 week intensive summer language institutes abroad in critical foreign languages. Approximately 600 scholarships each year. In 2017, institutes were offered in Jordan, Morocco, and Oman (Arabic); Azerbaijan (Azerbaijani and Turkish); China and Taiwan (Chinese); India (Bangla, Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu); Indonesia; Japan; Russia; South Korea; Tajikistan (Persian); and Tanzania (Swahili).

DAAD Scholarships for study in Germany: the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers scholarships for U.S. students to study in Germany. Options include:

  • University Summer Course Grants of approximately $1,500 – $1,800, for students enrolling in summer courses offered by German universities. Applicants must have completed at least two years of college-level German language study and one year of college study by the time of participation.
  • Undergraduate Scholarships providing a monthly stipend of approximately $850 per month plus additional funds to help with travel costs, for students studying in Germany for a semester or an academic year. Applicants must have completed the second year of college prior to participation.

Education New Zealand Scholarships for students studying in New Zealand for a semester or year. Options include Travel Awards of $2,000 to help cover flight costs for study in New Zealand, and Excellence Awards of $500 for students studying abroad at a New Zealand university. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, be currently at least a sophomore at a U.S. college or university, be at least 18 years old at the time of application, and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Freeman Awards for study in East or Southeast Asia (Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam). Awards up to $3,000 for summer (minimum 8 weeks), $5,000 for semester/quarter, $7,000 for academic year study in one of the listed countries. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, have a minimum 2.8 GPA, and have demonstrated financial need. Applicants for summer awards cannot have spent more than 4 weeks in the country they intend to study in within the last 5 years; quarter/semester/year applicants cannot have spent more than 6 weeks in their target country in the last 5 years.

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes for study in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Fully-funded (airfare, room and board, cultural activities, academic credit) 3-6 week summer programs for U.S. first-year and second-year college students to study at British university summer schools. Approximately 50 scholarships each year. In 2017, institute options included Shakespearean theater in London, archaeology in Durham, international development and politics in London, Irish studies in Belfast, Scottish studies in Dundee, technology and innovation in Glasgow, history of the transatlantic slave trade in Bristol, British culture in Sussex, media and design in London, and climate change in Exeter. Minimum 3.5 GPA required.
