Course Description

Introduces monitoring systems used in the Catheterization Lab setting with their basic use and functions. Prerequisites: VIR 101 and VIR 102 and VIR 103 and VIR 104 or department permission.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify various physiological monitoring systems, their usage and their limitations for cardiology, interventional radiology and neurology.

1. Students will be required to document physiological monitoring via simulated case studies for..

   a. Philips

   b. McKesson

   c.  Mac Lab

   d.  Cupid (Cardiac module in Epic)

Outcome Assessment Strategies

1.  Assess students understanding and accuracy of monitoring by simulated case studies

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

1. Measure patient's baseline physiologic values (ECG, oxygen saturation, pulse, respirations)

2. Identify patterns of cardiac arrhythmias (atrial, ventricular, junctional) 

3. Patient management procedures for arrhythmias

4. Recognize change in ventricular pressure with respect to change in time (dP/dt) and how it is determined

5 Cardiac output measurements, including Fick method and thermal dilution

6. Area-length method and computer evaluation techniques of ventricular volume analysis 

7. Function of transducers

8. Calibrate transducers

9. Valvular gradients and determine valve area

10. Indications for inserting temporary or permanent pacemaker or internal cardiac defibrillators

11. Indications for and principles of intraaortic balloon pump (IABP)

12. Cardiac vascular resistance, regurgitant disease, shunts and valve stenosis
