Course Description

Explores the different roles, skill sets, jobs and equipment associated with the development of digital media. Examines the processes involved in producing content to meet a specific communication goal toward a target audience. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Prepares the student to begin a sequential five course series covering: designing for multimedia, multimedia graphic and elements production, multimedia project authoring, product delivery, and the business of multimedia by understanding the basics of multimedia technology and their application in the multimedia industry.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion the student will be able to:

Define multimedia to potential clients.
Identify and describe the function of the general skill sets in the multimedia industry.
Identify the basic components of a multimedia project.
Identify the basic hardware and software requirements for multimedia development and playback.

Course Activities and Design

Course material will be presented in a lecture format. This course is designed to maximize learning through the use of strategies such as outcome based instruction, collaborative learning, contextual application and performance based assessment. Lecture material will consist of discussion, diagrams, multimedia, and other educationally sound practices. Other activities will include hands-on utilization of multimedia software. Demonstration and handout materials will be provided.
Students will be required to interact in class discussions, perform effective internet searches, and prepare a simple interactive multimedia project.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Assessment is designed to indicate achievement of the course outcome and performance tasks. The instructor will outline the methods used to assess student progress and the criteria for assigning a grade at the beginning of the course. Assessment will be based upon a combination of in-class participation, attendance, examinations, and quality of the multimedia project(s). Determination of problem solving skills, team work, and communication skills may also be included.
