Course Description

Provides an overview of Landscape industry career fields available and the necessary job search skills to be competitive in the marketplace. Includes development or refinement of job search materials, applications, resumes, cover letters, portfolios, interview skills, informational interviews and social media presence. Must be enrolled in a second year of an LAT degree program. Prerequisites: Instructor approval required. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Specialized sections may focus on specific career areas to meet major program requirements. Some sections may include portfolio development or other career-specific job search techniques.

Explores broad range of job search techniques, including building a job network, compiling appropriate information for job applications, targeting cover letters and resumes, typical interview questions and techniques. Promotes overall understanding of the job search process. Covers strategies for: researching, preparing for, and acquiring a job.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Perform research to make informed decisions about career options and education/training requirements for employment and advancement.
  • Communicate effectively with peers and potential employers using  phone calls, email, professional networking and Informational Interviews.
  • Continually develop and revise appropriate job search plans and materials.
  • Prepare for and execute effective informational and job interviews.
  • Create and maintain a professional social media presence to optimize networking opportunities.
  • Continue to self-identify career opportunities and target specific jobs that match current skills and career goals.

Course Activities and Design

A.  Identification of personal Job Skills

  1. List and describe work history and work-related activities, and prior education, training and certifications.
  2. Identify Self Management, Transferable and job-specific skills.

B.  Identification of Job Qualifications

  1. Recognize resources for researching companies and jobs.
  2. Locate and research a professional position.  Describe position title, duties and qualifications.

C.  Development of Job Search materials

  1. Determine proper resume format.
  2. Draft and revise master applications
  3. Develop and tailor resume for position being applied for
  4. Develop cover letter, targeting employer identified skills

C.  Demonstrate Understanding of the Interview Process

  1. Develop awareness of the various types of job interviews.
  2. Recognize patterns of typical job interviews.  Exhibit appropriate responses to sample interview questions.

D.  Demonstrate Understanding of the Overall Job Search Process

  1. Describe major elements of job search, including skills identification, company/job research, application materials development, contact strategies, successful interviewing techniques, and job success.
  2. Develop a job search plan and a portfolio reflecting knowledge of the industry and

    Participation in employer based mock interviews

  3. Create appropriate Social Medial presence for networking with others in the industry.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

OUTCOME ASSESSMENT

Students will demonstrate understanding of the learning outcomes by these tasks conducted individually and in cooperation with other students or industry employers:

  1. Research, identify and summarize specific job openings and application processes in written and oral form.
  2. Demonstrate research skills that utilize printed and electronic company and career information.
  3. Develop job search tools appropriate to a specific job or career field, including resume, letters, application, portfolio, etc.
  4. In-class/ participation demonstrating knowledge of the subject matter, including effective interviewing techniques.
  5. Create a social media presence conducive to effective career networking.
