Introduces mechanisms that translate motion and force, including cams, gears, belts/pulleys, and chains/sprockets. Introduces components such as pawls ratchets, linkages, and levers. Covers the creation of drawings for stock (shelf) items and custom designs. Prerequisites: CADD 160 and CADD 175. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Create technical mechanical drawings using kinematics principles.
- Apply ANSI-ASME industry standards in the preparation of technical mechanical drawings.
- Research and apply online resources to identify parts and incorporate them in the preparation of technical mechanical drawings.
- Utilize the Machinery’s Handbook to determine the correct size tolerance for detail parts on technical mechanical drawings.

1 Belts and Chains
- Identify and explain a difference between types of standard design belts and types of standard design chain drives.
- Identify and explain the devices on which the different types of belts and chains ride.
- Identify and explain the selection processes required for belt and chain drives by power and application specifications.
- Identify and explain different types of rotating gear drives.
- Identify and explain different types of linear or interrupted motion gear drives.
- Identify and explain the selection processes required for the gear drives by power and application specification.
- Identify and explain types of cam designs and their advantages/limitations.
- Identify and explain cam nomenclature.
- Identify and draw cam motions.
- Identify and explain cam follower types and design.
- Identify and explain the selection processes required for cam design by motion and power application.
4 Linkages and Levers
- Identify and explain terms and nomenclature of linkages, levers, cranks and pawls. Identify and explain motion nomenclature and displacement diagrams.
- Identify and demonstrate motions involving ratchets and other motion selectors.
5 Working Drawings
- Identify and demonstrate motion of linkages, levers and cranks, and pawls.
- Identify and demonstrate working drawings including dimensioning/tolerancing with ASME Y14.5M-1994 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing where applicable.
- Identify and demonstrate displacement diagrams on drawings where applicable.
- Identify and specify on drawings, a material selection and related notations and specifications.
