Course Description

Covers the language of blueprints including lines, views, dimensioning, print organization, welding symbols and structural shapes. Prerequisites: WR 80, MTH 20. Prerequisites/concurrent: RD 90 or IRW 90. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This is an outcome based course utilizing a lecture format.  This course includes classroom discussions and practical demonstrations.  Course outcomes will include the following: the ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions, develop visualization and interpretation skills and understand and perform lay out.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the basic elements of a blueprint.
  2. Create orthographic, oblique and isometric drawings by visualizing three dimensional objects.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the AWS Welding Symbol and its location of elements.
  4. Identify edge preparations and specifications for common weld types.
  5. Demonstrate a basic understanding of metallurgy.
  6. Identify common structural steel shapes and threaded and non-threaded fasteners.
  7. Demonstrate a basic understanding of non-destructive examination (NDE).

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Assessment is a continuous process throughout the learning experience.  The student will be involved in a self-assessment, peer assessment and instructor assessment of performance tasks and course outcomes.  The course syllabus will identify the criteria for assigning a course grade.  The methods of assessment will include one or more of the following: oral or written examinations, quizzes, and written assignments.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Evaluate the basic elements of a blueprint.

  • Assess notes, views, lines, sections and detail drawings
  • Interpret weld symbols, tolerances and dimensioning

Create orthographic, oblique and isometric drawings by visualizing three dimensional objects

  • Utilize orthographic projections to develop a sketch of missing views
  • Utilize orthographic projections to create oblique and isometric drawings
  • Interpret oblique drawings to create orthographic projections

Demonstrate an understanding of the AWS Welding Symbol and its location of elements

  • Interpret the standardized information applied to the reference line and tail of the welding symbol
  • Interpret arrow side and other side as applies to the reference line
  • Identify weld types, joint design, and positions
  • Identify and interpret weld symbols

Understand the specifications and edge preparation for common weld types

  • Interpret edge prep and specifications for the following weld types: fillet, groove, back, backing, melt-through, plug, slot, surfacing, edge, spot, seam, stud-                         weld, surfacing, and pipe-welding

Demonstrate a basic understanding of metallurgy

  • Explain metal structure
  • Classify ferrous and nonferrous metals
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the many metal identification tests
  • Understand heat and its effects on distortion and stress of metal

Identify common structural steel shapes and threaded and non-threaded fasteners

  • Identify common structural steel shapes including: beams, channel, angle, tee, tubing and pipe
  • Identify rivet types and conventional rivet symbols used on prints
  • Identify and interpret thread notes
  • Understand standard thread classification and designation
  • Interpret thread representations including; simplified, schematic, and detailed

Demonstrate a basic understanding of non-destructive examination (NDE)

  • Identify common NDE methods including visual; radiographic, ultrasonic, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, electromagnetic, and acoustic emission testing.
  • Interpret NDE symbols as applied to the welding symbol
