Course Description

Group instruction in guitar. Covers traditional classical guitar technique. Focuses on note reading and basic music theory as applies to guitar. Topics include single line first position melodies, common arpeggio patterns and music in two or more parts. Includes both solo and ensemble performance. Attention given to history and repertoire of the guitar. No previous experience required. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Students will be able to perform single line melodies and simple polyphonic pieces in the first position.
  • Students will be able to execute musical works using basic classical guitar technique.
  • Students will be able to recognize the basic components of music theory.
  • Students will begin to be able to identify the stylistic variations between musical genres.
