Course Description

Course examines the causes of obesity, its impact on human health and explores weight loss and diet options for the individual from a holistic perspective, including social, emotional, and physical dimensions of human health. Recommended: Students have a WR 121 skill level. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Demonstrate an understanding of how behavioral, environmental, cultural and genetic factors influence body weight and obesity.  
  • Develop media literacy skills to analyze current diet fads, weight loss trends and treatment for accuracy.  
  • Design and implement a specific, personalized weight control plan.  
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the personal health risks associated with excess body weight and obesity.  
  • Demonstrate the ability to find reliable, safe, scientifically sound information regarding methods of weight control.

  • Define obesity, lean body mass, and body composition and relate these concepts to optimal human health.
  • Analyze how behavior, environment, culture and genetics influence a person’s chances of becoming obese.
  • Learn to put together a comprehensive lifetime weight control plan.
  • Explain the relationship between weight management and physical activity.
  • Develop a physical activity program that maximizes weight loss.
  • Know the relationship between obesity and the development of specific human diseases.
  • Reflect upon and describe how obesity may influence an individual’s emotional, social, and spiritual health.
  • Relate behavior change models to prevention and treatment of obesity Analyze current food and diet fads for accuracy.
  • Identify components of a healthy eating plan using the guidelines for healthy eating provided by the U.S. Government
  • Outline the relationship between weight management and physical activity.
  • Analyze media messages and images for ideal body type, obesity stereotypes, and diet programs.
  • Analyze several health sources for information bias and reliability.
