Course Description

Examines the challenges that women face as victims, perpetrators and professionals within the justice system. Discusses the sources of data collection for women and crime. Introduces feminist criminology and its contributions to the research on women and the justice system. Prerequisites: WR 121 or any writing course for which WR 121 is a prerequisite. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Explain women's roles as victims, offenders, and professionals within the criminal justice system.
  • Discuss the feminist movement's role in the issues of women in the criminal justice system.
  • Identify sources of crime data, along with their strengths and weaknesses.

Course Activities and Design

  • Reading the assigned textbook chapters;
  • Watching instructor lectures or reviewing instructor slides/notes/announcements/pinned posts on the assigned chapters;
  • Watching assigned videos or reading assigned linked articles (varies by Week)
  • Participating in weekly Discussions
  • Completing any additional Homework Assignments
  • Completing Quizzes
  • Writing a final paper

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students may demonstrate learning outcomes by any, some or all of the following:

  1. Completing assignments designed to integrate course materials into personal & community issues concerning mental health and the law.
  2. Attendance at, or participation in lectures, workshops, or other community or campus events related .
  3. Assessments consisting of objective and/or essay questions that require integration, application, and critical examination of course concepts
