Course Description

Second term of a two-term in-hospital clinical internship designed to provide supervised experiences including direct patient care responsibilities. Emphasizes patients in crisis and refining the skills to assess and appropriately treat patients experiencing a variety of medical and trauma-related illnesses. Includes effective principles of therapeutic communication, oral, written and electronic communications comparable to those experienced in the pre-hospital care situation. Prerequisites: EMS 244, Department permission.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate appropriate professional standards of appearance and behavior while wearing the required clinical attire.
  2. Utilize interpersonal communication skills that result in effective information exchange with patients, family and care givers, and other healthcare professionals.
  3. Utilize critical thinking and problem solving skills to recognize emergency patient conditions and evaluate effectiveness of interventions.
  4. Demonstrate skill competency on actual patients of varying ages and complaints.
  5. Effectively communicate with persons of diverse cultural backgrounds and roles in a variety of settings.
  6. Demonstrate ethical and legal responsibilities in regard to health care.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to adapt care while managing the care of clients with changing health care needs.
  8. Demonstrate knowledge of didactic content and lab skills in developing and implementing a treatment plan for a variety of patients in assigned healthcare settings.
  9. Develop a treatment plan based on the patient’s history and physical exam.
  10. Solicit and utilize a preceptor’s feedback to improve performance.
  11. Perform the communication and documentation functions of the job of Paramedic.

Course Activities and Design

Course outcomes and objectives are met in a variety of clinical facilities for this course. Areas not completed in EMT 223-Clinical Internship I will be completed during this course. Departments will include: Emergency; CICU; ICU; Anesthesia ; Labor and Delivery; PANDA/Peds ; Poison Control Center; Burn Center; Psychosocial; Respiratory Therapy; On campus activities will include lectures, lab skills, course review and employment acquisition skills.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be graded on a Pass/No Pass basis. Clinical preceptors will assess each student on an assessment form designed for the specific clinical area reflecting the skills and abilities required of paramedic interns.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

During the course the student may be presented with the following:

1.elicit histories and perform physical examinations (including obstetrical history, locate fetal heart sounds, accurately time contractions)
2.perform venipuncture
3.perform endotracheal intubation
4.clear a patient’s airway
5.maintain and clear the patient’s airway
6.appropriately use airway adjuncts, oxygen, BVM
7.utilize sterile technique
8.prepare and administer medications (IM, IV, topical, oral, subcutaneous, and nebulized)
9.interpret EKG’s
10.utilize universal body substance precautions
11.perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation
12.become familiar with laboratory test results and relate them to the patient’s condition and expected treatment
13.observe various levels of consciousness and the correlation of vital signs and neurological signs with changes in LOC (levels of consciousness)
14.complete a medical record in an accurate, legible, and organized manner
15.insert a urinary catheter using sterile/aseptic technique
16.insert a nasogastric tube
17.accurately obtain, assess and document patient’s vital signs
18.observe the assessment and follow up of patients during trauma rounds
19.familiarize themselves with the application of mechanical ventilation
20.prepare and administer IV solutions and/or parenteral medications
21.assess orthopedic injuries and select the appropriate method for immobilizing the injured extremity
22.recognize different types of wounds and select the appropriate management (burns, lacerations/abrasion)
23.observe signs and symptoms of the different stages of labor
24.observe the technique of assisting the mother in a normal delivery
25.observe the difficulties encountered in a difficult delivery
26.observe and assess the newborn with regards to vital signs, need for resuscitative efforts, and maintenance of a neutral thermal environment
27.charting
28.oral report (“Hear Report”)
29.topical lectures, lab skills, and content review
30.resume writing, job interview skills, and interaction with potential employers
