Course Description

Provides instruction and reinforcement of Subaru-specific vehicle systems, theory, and operation. Introduces Subaru-specific operational structures, tooling, and service information relevant to the diagnosis and repair of Subaru vehicles. Requirement: current enrollment in Automotive Service Technology program. Prerequisites: AM 100, AM 161 and AM 162. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course is designed for students with no previous industry experience. Students will develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to perform repairs on Subaru supplied vehicles. This course will prepare students for Subaru Dealership employment through the use of WBT (web based training), discussion panels and classroom instruction. This is the skill level necessary for employment at a dealership apprentice level.

The broader purpose of this course is to provide students with authentic experience in basic industry skills and concepts at the dealership level and to ensure their success on-the-job. These skills include scan tool use, service information, warranty requirements, professionalism and responsible customer service.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Utilize a combination of Subaru vehicles, components, and service information to prepare for working in rapidly changing industry environments.
  2. Communicate professionally with employers, customers, and co-workers using Subaru dealership language and following Subaru dealership protocols.
  3. Develop and implement strategies and processes to solve Subaru vehicle diagnosis and repair tasks with limited or difficult to obtain service information.
  4. Perform Subaru vehicle repair to industry standards.

Course Activities and Design

  1. Successfully complete assigned Subaru WBT (web based training).
  2. Apply concepts from Subaru WBT during classroom discussions in order to prepare for manufacturer course module tests.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

To reach the outcomes, students will complete the following tasks:

  1. Perform Subaru web-based training (WBT).
  2. Participate in Subaru dealership panel discussion.
  3. Diagnose Subaru vehicles through the use of Subaru specific scan tool.
  4. Navigate successfully Subaru specific service information and obtain diagnostic information.
  5. Achieve minimum of 70% on written and practical exams.
  6. Meets minimum requirements for attendance and standard shop practices.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Critical to the effective diagnosis and repair of any automotive system is an understanding of how and why certain components work. On today’s automobile, this is often more useful for the technician than the ability to perform a particular adjustment or replacement. A technician must also have the ability to determine which repairs are in their own and customer's best interest. To develop this background understanding of automotive systems, students will explore the following concepts:

•Communication with customers
•Customer satisfaction as business strategy
•Teamwork in the work place
•Cooperative problem solving
•Work absence and attendance

Physical laws:

•Hydraulic theory

Skills:

Students will build an inventory of the following skills to prepare for a career as a dealership apprentice technician.

•Service information navigation and usage.
•Repair order documentation and warranty repairs.
•Scan tool navigation and diagnostic strategies to solve vehicle system failures.
