Prerequisites: A reading score of 43 on the ASSET assessment test (equivalent of reading score entry to WR 121) is required to take literature classes.

Course Description: English 105 enhances enjoyment of plays, increases understanding of the conventions of drama, and encourages explorations of human experience. Students will be asked to read plays closely. Emphasis is placed on the explication of specific elements of drama:; interpretive skills are developed by encouraging students to support opinion with evidence from the text. The focus of the course is on class discussion and careful reading of the material.

Format: Lecture and class and small group discussion.

Grading Evaluation: This is approximately how your grade will be calculated:
Written projects: 190 points  and  class participation 20 points

 

A-Superior

189-210 points

 

B- Above Average

168-188 points

 

C- Average

147-167 points

 

D- Substandard

126-146 points

 

F- Failure

125 and below

Feb. 27th is the last day to withdraw without a grade.

Class Attendance: Class attendance is strongly recommended; class
participation is also part of your grade.

Plagarism policy: Plagarism is a serious academic offense and will result in
an automatic "F".

Late Papers: Late papers will be accepted, but the grade will be lowered. No
papers will be accepted after the last day of class.

Read pp. 1-24 and be prepared to discuss the questions about Trifles on pp. 23-24. Also read 1475-1484; 1495-1502; and 1509-11.

Jan. 13-20   

Read and be prepared to discuss Shepard's True West p. 1222.

Jan. 22   

Read and be prepared to discuss Valdez' Los Vendidos p. 936.        Due: Paper 1: a play review OR a critical analysis OR a character or staging study. Length: 500-750 words.

Jan. 27-Feb. 3  

Read and be prepared to discuss Fo's "We Won't Pay p. 1102.

Feb. 5   

In class: closed book quiz and open book essay questions covering the material we've discussed in class so far.

Feb. 10-17   

Read and be prepared to discuss Brecht's The Good Woman of Setzuan p. 1006.

Feb. 19 

Read and be prepard to discuss Walcott's Pantomime p. 1127.         Due: Paper 2.

Feb. 24-26   

Pantomime continued.

March 2-9   

Read and be prepared to discuss Wilson's Fences p. 1313.

March 11

Due: Paper 3.

March 16
