Drop-in English Tutoring
The English Skills Center's objective is to help students gain the English skills they need to accomplish their academic and life goals. In order to accomplish this objective, we work hard to provide a supportive, non-threatening environment in which students feel comfortable and encouraged. In addition, we seek to inspire confidence and foster independent learning.
The English Skills Center provides drop-in tutoring on a first-come, first-served basis. English tutors will typically limit tutoring sessions to 20 minutes to encourage students to regularly apply the knowledge being tutored.
When coming in for tutoring assistance, please follow the guidelines listed below:
-
Check in at the front computer. All students coming into the center must do this.
-
Sit at one of the tables designated "DROP-IN."
-
Proofread (read and correct) papers for any problems you can find before signing up to see a tutor. Watch for the following problems: run-on sentences, fragments, verb tenses, articles, omitted words, capitalization, and punctuation.
-
Know what your assignment is, and be ready to share it with the tutor.
-
Be prepared to ask the tutor questions about your assignment.
-
Sign up on the pink "Drop-in Student" clipboard when you are ready to see a tutor.
Please remember that it is not the tutor's job to "edit" your paper. However, s/he will gladly help you edit your own paper.
