The English Skills Center provides multiple options for students wanting to improve their basic English skills.
ALC 50 (Basic English Language Skills Lab for 0 Credits): Students can work on individualized plans of study using the center's curriculum and resources. However, they have no minimum time requirement. This option is ideal for students with tight schedules or situations in which they are not allowed to take classes for credit.
ALC 51 (Basic English Language Skills Lab for 1 Credit): Students work on individualized plans of study using the center's curriculum and resources. In addition to completing work expectations agreed upon by the student and Instructor of Record, the student must spend 30 hours in the English Skills Center during the course of the term. Work expectations reflect these time requirements and the individual's current skill level. Prerequisite: Placement into WR 80, RD 80, ESOL 250, and/or ESOL 252.
ALC 52 (Basic English Language Skills Lab for 2 Credits): Students work on individualized plans of study using the center's curriculum and resources. In addition to completing work expectations agreed upon by the student and Instructor of Record, the student must spend 60 hours in the English Skills Center during the course of the term. Work expectations reflect these time requirements and the individual's current skill level. Prerequisite: Placement into WR 80, RD 80, ESOL 250, and/or ESOL 252.
ALC 53 (Basic English Language Skills Lab for 3 Credits): Students work on individualized plans of study using the center's curriculum and resources. In addition to completing work expectations agreed upon by the student and Instructor of Record, the student must spend 90 hours in the English Skills Center during the course of the term. Work expectations reflect these time requirements and the individual's current skill level. Prerequisite: Placement into WR 80, RD 80, ESOL 250, and/or ESOL 252.
In these classes, students work on individualized plans of study to improve reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, grammar, spelling, and/or English conversation/pronunciation skills with assistance from instructors and tutors. They may also receive support in regard to their English skills for other classes they are taking. Effective study skills are emphasized as well.
