Bird Watching: Identification, Ecology and Fun Facts

Familiarize yourself with the beautiful birds of the Pacific NW. Learn to identify them by sight, sound, habitat and behavior. This course includes one classroom session and two field trips .

  • Class #1: In the classroom, we'll learn the basics of field identification from 6:30-8:30pm
  • Class #2: Field trip to Smith and Bybee from 9am-12pm
  • Class #3: Field trip to Oaks Bottom from 9am-12pm

Classroom supplies: Bring a pocket-sized notebook, pen, and your field guide.

Field trip supplies: Bring a rain gear, field guides, and binoculars.

Supply notes: Any bird field guide of the Western US will do, but Birds of the Willamette Valley Region by Harry Nehls or Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Western North America are recommended. Binoculars are almost essential for this class. If you do not have your own, try to borrow a pair from a friend or purchase some at REI or Portland Audubon.
