Academic Dishonesty: Consequences

ESOL 162 Academic Writing 6

Bob Allen, Instructor

All students in my academic-level classes receive the syllabus, which advises them to go to the PCC website and read the section on academic integrity at http://www.pcc.edu/pcc/abt/rights/student_rights/integrity.htm   Scroll to page 9.

One particular kind of academic dishonesty is plagiarism. Go to the following website of Indiana University for more information about plagiarism: http://education.indiana.edu/%7Efrick/plagiarism/item1.html

Most students are honest, and many observed dishonest actions may be the result of misunderstanding or, possibly, cultural differences.  However, actions have consequences. The following are the consequences of plagiarism, cheating, use of unpermitted help, and other dishonest behavior in this class. The penalty depends on the gravity of the action.

FIRST INSTANCE

·         20% reduction in score for work

·         0% as score for work

·         F as final grade in class

SECOND INSTANCE

·         0% as score for work

·         F as final grade in class

THIRD INSTANCE

·         F as final grade in class

The specific penalty in each instance depends on the severity of the offense. Receipt of a grade of F for the class is subject to the investigation and approval of the Dean of Student Services.

If there are any differences with official PCC policy, the college policy prevails.
