What We Do

The Community Legacy Program of Our United Villages recognizes that every person can make a positive difference for the benefit of all.  Our Sharing Ideas events and Legacy Stories provide a platform for increasing awareness about how people are actively engaged in strengthening the social fabric of community.  We provide free tools and resources to assist people who seek pathways for achieving more vibrant, resilient and equitable communities.

Opportunities for service with us

We are currently seeking volunteers to fill two positions.  Both are a great way for students to develop professional skills while learning about the many positive, community-building actions taking place in the Portland area:

-A Volunteer Videographer to create an ongoing series of short films sharing the stories of the different ways people throughout Portland are working together to strengthen community.  The films will take two forms, one documenting our Sharing Ideas events and the other presenting the stories of individuals and groups through interviews.  The Volunteer Videographer must have some videography experience and must be able to provide their own equipment capable of producing high quality films.

-A Volunteer Writer and Editor to craft short articles (Legacy Stories) about the different ways people throughout Portland are working together to strengthen community.  Each Legacy Story illuminates an action, practice or project performed by everyday people for the benefit of community. Groups share the idea behind their efforts, how they moved their ideas into action, what they do today, and how they hope to make a difference for tomorrow.  Formats vary, but most stories are about 500 words long and are based on interviews with people who are involved in the effort being highlighted.

Both volunteer positions will begin in January 2013.  The positions’ time requirements are flexible depending on the volunteer’s availability, but please be able to set a schedule with the Community Legacy Team prior to starting.   Both positions can be shared by multiple volunteers.
