What We Do

SOS programs offer our value-based leadership curriculum that enhances the experience for students by promoting self-respect, positive relationships, social skills, and positive values. Students discuss and discover the meaning of our 5 core values; courage, discipline, integrity, wisdom, and compassion. SOS Sherpas (adult mentors) encourage the students to uncover the way these values affect their everyday actions.

Opportunities for service with us

Volunteer with SOS Outreach, formerly Snowboard Outreach Society, to help Portland area youth discover the meaning of the SOS core values of: courage, discipline, integrity, wisdom, and compassion. Adult mentors, called SOS Sherpas, help middle and high school students understand how these core values affect their everyday actions. SOS Programs promote self-respect, positive relationships, social skills, and positive values. Our SOS Programs at Mt. Hood match local youth with volunteer instructors and mentors to learn how to snowboard—while overcoming their fears; learning more about themselves; developing new, positive peer and mentor relationships; and putting the core values into practice. Coordinators are responsible for facilitating the actions of each group on the hill, ranging in size from 20 to 50 students and up to 10 adult volunteers.

Each SOS session consists of 5 ride days during the season: February, March, or April on Saturdays and/or Sundays.

The following on-hill volunteers are needed: adult mentors, coordinators, and photographers. The following off-hill volunteers are also needed: SOS representatives at booths and shows; social media, graphic design, and marketing volunteers; fundraising volunteers; volunteers to organize donation requests; and snowboard shop liaisons. Free volunteer training is provided.
