| Set Limits with Students | | |
Event Campus: RC TLC
Event Details: Rachel Stone & Dawn Tsongas have put together a presentation that came out of the over-the-cubical wall discussions with colleagues about our discomfort setting limits with students. We've discovered two themes in these conversations, "Should I set a limit?" and "How can I set a limit?" Keeping in mind, central to both is a sense of, "Am I being fair?" The aim of the presentation is to understand the connection between workload and our limit setting with students, learn/share responses to student situations that catch us off guard and wishing we had handled it differently and build camaraderie in our common experience. PT Faculty Stipends available. Presenters: Dawn Tsongas, MS, LPC, RC Counseling Department and Rachel Stone, MS NCC, RC Psychology Department

| Reflections: A Photo Journey | | |
Event Campus: Sylvania
Event Details: A research study in the Chronicle of Higher Education found that only 20% of students feel welcome on campus after their first visit. How do we welcome people to our campuses? I will present PowerPoint slides that show parts of the 13 community college campuses that I visited as part of my sabbatical research on student leadership programs (Fall and Winter terms). I was struck by the differences between campuses in ways that they welcomed students. Some campuses felt cold and impersonal, while others appeared very student-centered. I hope that members of each faculty discipline and staff across the PCC campuses will attend to get ideas that may inspire ways that we can improve our ambience. A brainstorming discussion will follow the slides to share ideas that crop up from looking outside our boundaries. This may be a timely presentation in light of the remodel plans, but many of the ideas could be implemented immediately without expensive or extensive changes.

Event Details:
This session is part “show and tell” of tools and techniques presented at a 2011 GSA Penrose conference at Google HQ entitled “Google Earth and other visualization tools for Geoscience Research and Education”. The session will also include a “hands-on” component to allow participants to get first hand experience with GE and various instructional activities using it. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops (with Google Earth installed on it) to the workshop, though extra computers will be available for those who do not have a computer that that they can bring. Though many of the examples presented in the workshop will be from the geosciences, the workshop is open to all faculty, since all of the tools and activities are easily adaptable to a wide range of disciplines.

| Faculty Lecture - Ann Cary | | |
Event Campus: RC TLC
Event Details: In January 2012, I (Ann Cary, Mathematics Instructor) attended a conference in San Francisco on Mathematics Education and Social Justice. In March 2012, I attended a conference focusing on minority women and mathematics.
After returning from the first conference, I formed a work group with fellow mathematics faculty at PCC. Our goal is to create projects and activities involving math and social justice that are relevant to the community college classroom.
In this talk, I plan to share what I learned at these conferences and the progress and objectives of the work group. The work group is very interested in cross-disciplinary collaboration and faculty from all disciplines are encouraged to attend.

| Setting Limits With Your Students - Part 2 | | |
Event Campus: RC TLC
Event Details: Rachel Stone & Charlene Hansen have put together a presentation that came out of the over-the-cubical wall discussions with colleagues about our discomfort setting limits with students. Part-Time faculty stipends available. Presenters: Rachel Stone, MS NCC, RC Psychology Department and Charlene Hansen, PCC Rock Creek Evening/Weekend Campus Coordinator, PT Faculty

Event Campus:Rock Creek
Event Details:Why set limits with students? Dawn Tsongas, Rachel Stone & Charlene Hansen will lead a presentation from 4pm-4:30pm and a workshop from 4:30pm-5:30pm about instructors’ discomfort setting limits with students and will provide a safe, supportive opportunity for instructors to ask the questions, "Should I set a limit?", "How can I set a limit?" and “Will I enforce the limit?”. The aim of the presentation/workshop is to understand the connection between workload and our limit setting with students, learn/share responses to student situations that catch us off guard and build camaraderie in our common experience.
