Vicarious Trauma & Burnout in Faculty & Staff; Risks & Prevention.

Event Campus: Sylvania TLC Lounge

Event Details: OPEN TO ALL FACULTY & STAFF.
We work in a unique environment where we are confronted everyday with a student population that experience distinct struggles. Trauma focused studies have shown that 90% of the population we work with has experienced some type of trauma at least once in their lifetime. How we experience and respond to our students affects our professional and personal lives. Vicarious Trauma is defined as a negative response that happens over time when dealing with a challenging population. Vicarious Trauma and it’s related concepts are real and valid responses to our continual compassion for our students. This presentation will define and describe these responses, explain the risks, and outline prevention techniques faculty and staff can utilize to make sure we keep a positive outlook and a supportive environment for ourselves and those we work with.
Bring your lunch and join us.
ALL STAFF AND FACULTY ARE WELCOME.

Reflections: A Photo Journey

Event Campus: Sylvania

Event Details: A research study in the Chronicle of Higher Education found that only 20% of students feel welcome on campus after their first visit. How do we welcome people to our campuses?
I will present PowerPoint slides that show parts of the 13 community college campuses that I visited as part of my sabbatical research on student leadership programs (Fall and Winter terms). I was struck by the differences between campuses in ways that they welcomed students. Some campuses felt cold and impersonal, while others appeared very student-centered. I hope that members of each faculty discipline and staff across the PCC campuses will attend to get ideas that may inspire ways that we can improve our ambience. A brainstorming discussion will follow the slides to share ideas that crop up from looking outside our boundaries. This may be a timely presentation in light of the remodel plans, but many of the ideas could be implemented immediately without expensive or extensive changes.

Setting Limits With Your Students

Event Campus:Rock Creek

Event Details:Why set limits with students? Dawn Tsongas, Rachel Stone & Charlene Hansen will lead a presentation from 4pm-4:30pm and a workshop from 4:30pm-5:30pm about instructors’ discomfort setting limits with students and will provide a safe, supportive opportunity for instructors to ask the questions, "Should I set a limit?", "How can I set a limit?" and “Will I enforce the limit?”. Central to these questions is a sense of, "Am I being fair?" The aim of the presentation/workshop is to understand the connection between workload and our limit setting with students, learn/share responses to student situations that catch us off guard and build camaraderie in our common experience. Key to the session will be practical strategies of how an instructor can determine their limits and successfully build their limits into their course syllabus as well as their first class session. The session is open to PCC instructors, administrators and staff but is orientated toward the classroom setting. PT Faculty Stipends available. Presenters: Dawn Tsongas, L.P.C., RC Counseling Department, Rachel Stone, MS NCC, RC Psychology Department and Charlene Hansen, MS Ed, PCC Rock Creek Evening/Weekend Campus Coordinator, PT Faculty
