Assignment description and sample topics: During this library session, I
would like the librarian to guide students to the Biography database where
students can learn to use this DB and search for a historical figure who
accomplished something regarding social justice. Students will have a list
of people to begin with, but will also be able to search from the "related
topics" on the biography database or about more obscure people who interest
them. From this work, they will need to choose 3 sources to read including
one reference -- I may have them read fewer sources if they are reading a
longer source. They won't have time to read a book or anything of that
length. More shorter articles is the idea. They will be writing a poem
about the person they research from that person's perspective.
Upload class assignment and other relevant documents:
What are your learning outcomes for this session?
Students will experience using the library and meet at least one librarian.
Students will navigate to the library webpage and experience using a
database.
Students will begin to consider the question of whether a source is relevant
to their topic/assignment.
They will learn to email the sources to themselves.
Students will learn that there are different types of sources (reference,
popular, scholarly)
They don't need to use scholarly resources necessarily for this assignment.

Assignment description and sample topics:
This is a personal researched inquiry essay--a research paper with an "I"
voice that comes out of something important/interesting to the writer. A
sample paper could be about recycling:

I grew up in L.A. in the 70s, and my mom was a hard-core recycler--this was
back when you had to work to recycle--to use the can opener to remove the
lids and bottoms of tin cans, remove the paper, and flatten them. And I
learned well--I am now a recycling Nazi--and regularly rescue cans, paper,
and plastic bottles from the trash in my classroom and at the restaurant I
work brunch in. I glower as I remove the lids from plastic bottles in the
recycling, as they're a different kind of plastic, and can't be recycled.
But am I fooling myself, feeling so virtuous about my recycling? How much of
what we toss in the bins actually gets recycled? And what happens when the
"wrong" kind of plastic gets mixed in?

(This is my very rough draft of a beginning--I'm asking the students to use
something in their own life as a place of departure for their research.)

(This is my very rough draft of a beginning--I'm asking the students to use
something in their own life as a place of departure for their research.)

explaining and describing two possible future careers the student is

What are your learning outcomes for this session?
It's important for students at this point (end of ESOL) to receive some good
tips and guidance on how to do efficient and effective online research. I
think many students rely on Wikipedia and feel rather lost and overwhelmed by
the sheer volume of websites.

I would be thrilled with the learning outcomes listed above!
Other notes:
I have indicated 60 minutes for instruction, but if the process includes time
for students to spend doing on their own afterward, I am more than happy to
allow them a full two hours in the library. The class meets on MW 6:00-8:10
