Library instruction for R210 (SS)

Submitted on Thursday, June 20, 2013 - 18:48
Submitted by user: Anonymous
Submitted values are:

Instructor name: Martha Bailey
Students refer to me as: Martha
Instructor e-mail: mbailey@pcc.edu
Instructor phone: 971-722-3096
Instructor location: Rock Creek
Preferred contact: e-mail
Course subject: Religious Studies - R
Course number: 210
Course CRN: 30988
Number of Students: 20
ADA provisions needed: yes
Preferred Date: 2013-06-26
Preferred Time: 10:15 am
Alternate Date: 2013-07-01
Alternate Time: 9:00 am
Duration: 65Minutes
Do you need time to discuss non-library matters with your class on the day of
library instruction? Yes
If yes please specify: Demonstrating/having class set up a Google doc
Assignment description and sample topics: My usual range of World Religions
assignments: easiest way to view them is to add assigned instructor to class.
Sample topics would be: Judaism and its concepts of helping others in
relation to service-learning;a formal paper on Ashin Wirathu, fundamentalist
Buddhist leader in Burma/Myanmar;background on Jean Kwok, author of Girl in
Translation; finding information on Chinese New Year for a creative
presentation; doing background research to compare to a video on Scientology,
as well as finding such a video; locating the On Being presentation on
Sitting Bull/Tatanka Iyotake and then finding other information about him;
finding a mosque to visit in the area and doing background research on it;
doing research in preparation to interview a Hindu leader.
Upload class assignment and other relevant documents:
What are your learning outcomes for this session? At the end of the session,
students will understand that each assignment involves some form of research,
will know what kind of research to do for a given option, and will know which
library, and other, resources are appropriate for that option, and where to
begin to find those resources. They will have located and used the Religion
research guide. They will also know the ways to contact librarians for help,
and when to do so. I appreciate the sessions where the students are given
one of the above options and begin to locate sources for that option, which
they then share with the rest of the class. This actively involves all of the
students, and lets them begin to explore the resources, particularly from the
religion research guide.

Duration: 120Minutes
Do you need time to discuss non-library matters with your class on the day of
library instruction? No
If yes please specify:
Assignment description and sample topics: Library orientation and orientation
to the library databases, especially CQ Researcher and the hot topics
databases like Opposing Viewpoints. Over the long holiday weekend, students
will need to compose an exploratory essay with at least four sources. This is
like an annotated bibliography, except it has a reflective tone instead of
strict summary. Students need to pose a research question, narrow their
topic, and begin finding their sources. After the exploratory essay, students
will use the same topic for their big classical argument essay, which will be
ten pages, so this is the step where they reflect, learn the background of
their topic, and find their standpoint.
Upload class assignment and other relevant documents:
What are your learning outcomes for this session?
Develop a search strategy based on their research topic
Perform an efficient search of the library catalog for books and other
materials
Differentiate between scholarly journals and magazines
Construct a query for journal, magazine, or newspaper articles and evaluate
best choices in the results list
Physically locate items and other resources

Do you need time to discuss non-library matters with your class on the day of
library instruction? No
If yes please specify:
Assignment description and sample topics: At the time of instruction,
students will be writing a 3 to 5 page cause/effect argument essay. A minimum
of 2 PCC library database sources will be required. Students will be voting
as a class on 4 essay topics on which to write, so I can't provide you essay
topics at this time. However, I have uploaded the essay guidelines/topics
from Spring 2013 term to give you an idea of the topics students picked last
term.
Upload class assignment and other relevant documents:
Causal essay (New Version).docx:
http://www.pcc.edu/library/sites/default/files/webform/assignments/Causal%20essay%20%28New%20Version%29.docx

What are your learning outcomes for this session?
Become acquainted with PCC library databases. Since students will be required
to include opposing viewpoints in their arguments by the end of the term, I'd
like them to be introduced to the Opposing Viewpoints database and/or any
other databases you think will help them in this area.

Also, an explanation about the difference between research using scholarly
sources versus basic Google searches would be helpful. I'd like for students
to grasp the importance of implementing well-researched and peer reviewed
articles in their writing.

I would like to organize these same types of activities for my 171

similar to the bio ones. I will be giving them a literature search and
article review assignment this qtr.

Do you have a bio assignment? Or an ESR? I do not.
