Assignment description and sample topics:
The students are writing a proposal for Technical and Professional Writing.
This is not a generalized proposal as a comp class would write, but rather
specifically a business/professional proposal offering a deliverable for
which the writer would be responsible. Former topics include: building a cob
classroom for environmental studies classes, hosting a farmer's market on
PCC's campus, building a fitness center in an office, purchasing a van for a
company to use, suggesting a funeral home where the writer works offer
themselves as a wedding location, and moving a company's data storage to the
cloud.

The following is the assignment description:

Due Date: See Syllabus

Goals: Write a proposal to solve a problem or address an opportunity in your
field or concerning a business issue that interests you.

Length: 3-6 pages, single-spaced

Assignment:
• Decide upon a topic for your proposal. See below for a few suggestions.
The problem should be the appropriate scope to address in a proposal that
takes you two-three weeks to create.
• Research the topic thoroughly. Answer such questions as: Who is the
audience for your proposal? What have other individuals/organizations done
to address this issue? What are the barriers to solving this
problem/addressing this opportunity? What are the costs associated with your
proposal?
• Write a proposal that fits the general proposal format outlined in Markel
and evidenced in the examples we discussed in class.
• Include at least 5 sources, at least 2 of which must be secondary.

Grading Criteria:
• Persuasiveness: targets the needs of the audience, uses persuasive
language.
• Professionalism: demonstrates expertise, credentials, and inspires
confidence.
• Research: shows clear understanding of topic and appropriate number of
sources.
• Organization: follows appropriate proposal formatting.
• Correctness: is free of grammatical, punctuation and spelling errors.

Sample Topics:

Research:
• Into whether to switch technology (in your workplace)
• Into whether one research method in your field is more effective than
another
• Into how to best support international students at PCC
• Into the cultural differences that would be key factors in opening a
branch of your company in a foreign country

Goods and Services (funding, materials, services provided)
• Revising PCC’s website
• Applying for funding to take a group of students on a trip abroad
• Providing services or goods to a company or organization (such as lawn
care, a “green roof,” or web design)
• Creating a wellness program in your workplace
• Creating a board of people from industry to provide expertise about your
major

Students will be able to (check all that apply):
- Develop a search strategy based on their research topics (15 minutes)
- Construct a query for journal, magazine, or newspaper articles and
evaluate best choices in the results list (25 minutes)
- Other (please explain below) (15 minutes)
Other notes:
I apologize for the short notice - I recognize you may not have any
availability at this time.

If you do have availability, I'll be happy to communicate more about my
class's needs (primary research, trade publications, researching
stakeholders) with the host librarian.

Do you need time to discuss non-library matters with your class on the day of

If yes please specify: A few minutes at the beginning and end to give them
some reminders
Assignment description and sample topics:
The final essay is a 5-6 page essay with three outside (of class readings)
sources. It isn't a research paper, as the ideas must be based in their
experiences and not based on outside information, but they need to find other
authored sources talking about the ideas to add dimension and support to
their thesis.

The essay must include an idea from one of the class readings, which include
a variety of thinkers:
Germaine Greer, Nietzsche, Emerson, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Machiavelli,
Lao-Tzu, and Plato.
Students will be able to (check all that apply):
- Develop a search strategy based on their research topics (15 minutes)
- Differentiate between scholarly journals and magazines (15 minutes)
- Construct a query for journal, magazine, or newspaper articles and
evaluate best choices in the results list (25 minutes)
Other notes: Whatever seems most useful in helping students in your
experience is great. Thank you.
