Instructor's Name: Lara Messersmith-Glavin Instructor e-mail: lara.messersmith@pcc.edu Instructor's Phone: 4449 Instructor's Location: Sylvania Refer to me as: Lara Preferred contact: e-mail Course no. or title: RD 90 Course CRN: 40008 # of students: 25 ADA provisions needed: no Preferred Date: 2012-10-17 Alternate Date: 2012-10-22 Preferred Time: 9:45 am Alternate Time: 9:30 am Duration: 50 If other: Do you need time to discuss non-library matters with your class on the day of library instruction? No If yes please specify: Assignment description and sample topics: Every term I bring my RD 90 classes to the library to become familiar with the resources there, to learn how to use the catalog/ILL, and to select a novel for their outside reading projects for the term. It usually takes a little less than an hour. I've worked with several staff members so far, and all have been great. The important thing is to help these students understand what their options are, what resources are available to them, and then help them find a book they might enjoy reading. Many of these students have never read a book before, and most have not used a library. We have a recommended reading list, but it is not restrictive. There is a 250-page minimum for the novels they choose, and I prefer that they don't pick books in a series that they're already engaged in (for example, the third Twilight novel) - I'd rather they try something new. Students will be able to (check all that apply): - Develop a search strategy based on their research topics (15 minutes) - Perform an efficient search of the library catalog for books and other materials (15 minutes) - Physically locate items and other resources (brief library tour ) (15 minutes)

Do you need time to discuss non-library matters with your class on the day of library instruction? No If yes please specify: Assignment description and sample topics: Once I have a librarian assigned, and I've had more time working with students to form their research questions -- something on "nature deficit disorder" (The Nature Principle, by Richard Louv) and/or environmental sustainability, I'll send a list of topics to the librarian. Students will be able to (check all that apply): - Develop a search strategy based on their research topics (15 minutes) - Perform an efficient search of the library catalog for books and other materials (15 minutes) - Differentiate between scholarly journals and magazines (15 minutes) - Construct a query for journal, magazine, or newspaper articles and evaluate best choices in the results list (25 minutes) Other notes: If possible, I'd prefer each of the above to be abbreviated; I'd like to keep the instruction to 30-45 minutes, as a review, and center the instruction on creative key word searches, then have the students work in the library on their projects with guidance for individuals from the librarian (and myself).
Will there be 28 available computers or will some students need to bring their laptops?
