I would like students to be able to remain in the library to use
whatever class time remains, allowing them to research further.
Do you need time to discuss non-library matters with your class on the day of
library instruction? No
If yes please specify:
Assignment description and sample topics: The essay they will be working on
is a straight forward Informative Essay. I expect an array of topics. In
the past, I provided topics students chose to the librarian prior to the day
of meeting.
Students will be able to (check all that apply):
- Develop a search strategy based on their research topics (15 minutes)
- Perform an efficient search of the library catalog for books and other
materials (15 minutes)
- Differentiate between scholarly journals and magazines (15 minutes)
- Construct a query for journal, magazine, or newspaper articles and
evaluate best choices in the results list (25 minutes)
Other notes: Very helpful, connected to research, is how to choose well a
topic in terms of focusing the topic so that they are not just random facts,
and selecting well information. Most helpful in the past were the handouts
the librarian provided which included exercises that put to use the
information they had just been given. I can bring in an example if needed.
Also helpful (wonderful) was informing them about what librarians can do to
help them - and that the help is available even when they are working from
home. Documentation (MLA) and where to find on what is needed was great, and
of course they love finding out about the computer being able to properly
format for them! Thanks
