I want students to identify a social issue that is of personal interest to them and be able to locate different kinds of sources that discuss that issue--everything/anything from newspaper articles to scholarly articles to blogs. This issue is something they are going to "use" in three different assignments: One asks them to re-write a piece of creative non-fiction based on an event that has been
reported on in the newspaper and that is related to their social issue. The next will be a speech they have to write, outlining their concerns and establishing a position on the issue. The final will be a feature article on the issue in which they have to inform, entertain, and argue. For that assignment, I'm going to ask them to identify a particular magazine for the article so that they have to research who the audience is. I can provide prompts for these once I have them written!
