Final Essay:
A Proposal for the Betterment of Humankind

Your final essay—worth twenty five percent of your grade--will require you
to make a claim of policy for the betterment of humanity and the world. Your
proposal should be somewhat radical or controversial in nature, be eight to
ten pages in length, and employ a minimum of ten sources.

Your own proposal should include

A Description/Identification of the problem

A Thesis which proposes a solution to this problem, in the form of a claim of
policy, and
a list of reasons for adopting this policy, and a list of effects

A Demonstration of ways in which the proposal addresses the problem

A Consideration of alternative ways to achieve the desired outcome, and a
discussion of
why these alternatives are not preferable to your own

A Variety of Support, including
1) Quoted material incorporated properly into the essay
2) Inclusion of one chart or graph
3) One privately conducted survey or interview, with summarized results
4) References from several peer reviewed journals

An MLA Works Cited page of at least ten sources and proper in-text

Part of your grade for this essay (10 %)consists of a prospectus and
annotated bibliography. Your first step toward completing this final essay
is to compose the prospectus—that is, a half page to page long description
of your proposal with a tentative thesis. It should introduce the problem,
and frame your proposal as a solution in a way that is practical and clear.

Next, you should complete an annotated bibliography of eight sources( also
worth 5%). Essentially, an annotated bibliography is a works cited page
which lists your sources (in MLA format) and, beneath each source entry,
offers a brief paragraph assessing the source, speculating upon its purpose
and possible usefulness with regard to your proposal. Though you may turn
them in earlier if you wish, I will accept annotated bibliographies with the
final papers.

Though you may turn your work in earlier if you wish, your proposal will be
due in final form at our final meeting.. You'll be required to present your
proposal, highlighting your research and ideas, in class during finals week.

I welcome any questions regarding this assignment, and wish you all the best
of luck on this final assignment for the course!
