Assignment description and sample topics: This is a methods and skills course
for history students. I would like them to learn about research resources
available in the library (both primary and secondary sources), as well as how
to access instructor reserves. I would like them to get hands-on experience
as a class in accessing scholarly articles in particular. I would also like
instruction regarding the trusting (or not) of research sources available on
the internet.
Students will be able to (check all that apply):
- Develop a search strategy based on their research topics (15 minutes)
- Perform an efficient search of the library catalog for books and other
materials (15 minutes)
- Differentiate between scholarly journals and magazines (15 minutes)
- Construct a query for journal, magazine, or newspaper articles and
evaluate best choices in the results list (25 minutes)
