Assignment description and sample topics: Every term I take my RD 90 Ss to
the library for a tour, and then they are oriented to the catalog and search
databases so that they can browse and select a book for their outside novel
reading projects. They need to leave with a general sense of the resources
available to them through the library, as well as a book either in hand or
requested from another campus. The books need to be at least 250 pages,
fiction, and meet some basic level/appropriateness requirements. I have a
recommended reading list compiled by librarians at MHCC, but it is only
partially useful. I'm working on updating the list; meanwhile, students
should be introduced to the suggested reading lists on the PCC library
website.
Upload class assignment and other relevant documents:
What are your learning outcomes for this session?
Understand and feel comfortable with library resources.
Develop a search strategy based on their interests.
Perform an efficient search of the library catalog for books.
Locate and check out or request a fiction book of their choice.

Assignment description and sample topics: Want to review search engines
available to PCC students. Be able to determine legitimate sites, research
based search engines and sources. Would like to see what is not a
legitimate source vs good source. Special access to search engines only
available to PCC students. Working on selecting a topic and narrow the
focus for a 5-7 minute speech.

What are your learning outcomes for this session? Utilize search engines
efficiently and appropriately. Be able to discern bogus sources vs
legitimate. Learn to narrow your topic.
Other notes: Large class but probably only 14-16 students will show up.
would like to use computer lab in library.
