Assignment description and sample topics: Students will have a choice from
five general topics, and they will need to select and narrow a topic, find an
article in a periodical and then summarize the article. The assignment is
attached; students need help determining what makes good source material, how
to access library info, how to narrow a topic and any other clues you can
give them. Their background is very diverse as far as their level of library
experience. After a guided/group part of the presentation, I'd like them to
have some time to explore their own topic for the assignment.

What are your learning outcomes for this session? All of the above! Also:
become familiar with library resources and how to access them; develop skills
needed to be in control of information rather than at its mercy
Other notes: Generally speaking, even though they may be computer literate,
ESOL students are often unaware of the tools and resources available to them
through the library that can improve the end product of academic writing for
them, as opposed to encountering information through Wikipedia or Google
accidents. Please encourage thinking rather than giving up and switching
topics ad nauseum.

This is a business communication course, with a capstone
research/presentation project. Most students will have had minimal
experience with the library staff resources, how to conduct a database search etc. A brief overview of the library resources, staff roles and assistance scope and how to conduct searches and navigate the most common databases would be wonderful.
