Archaeology of Hawaii
February 23-28, 2014. Discover how people survived in prehistory on an island in the Pacific. What types of lives did people lead and what did they do for food? What were their socio-economic options and how did they deal with their enemies? What does the archaeological record tell us? This year's trip will focus on aquaculture and the multiple ways in which Hawaiians sustained themselves and their leaders in ancient times. We will look at a series of ancient aquaculture ponds that have recently been restored. We will discuss the importance of these very different ponds, including their significance to both the royalty of Hawaii and the population who maintained them. We will also visit old village sites where workers lived, a petroglyph (rock art) area, and battle site. In the afternoons, participants will be free to experience the island on their own. This can include snorkeling, paddle boarding, shopping, or just relaxing under a palm tree.
