Uses a case study approach to advanced behavioral and cognitive care issues, based on realistic scenarios in a variety of settings. Includes assessing appropriate long term care options for memory care, problem solving, functional levels and other challenges, managing surveys, responding to deficiencies, problem solving repetitive incident reports, implementing fall prevention programs, and developing family education and support programs. Welcome to GRN 236, Dementia Care Practice. GRN 235, Introduction to Dementia Care is a prerequisite for this course. This course uses analysis and problem-solving skills in a variety of case study scenarios presenting complex advanced behavioral and cognitive care issues. Students learn to apply best practices for dealing with challenging cognitive and behavioral issues, follow care plans, provide appropriate documentation and work collaboratively with all stakeholders, including multidisciplinary teams, medical and healthcare professionals, family, and community members. Students new to distance learning and D2L are required to complete the Online Orientation to D2L. I encourage students to attend the Fall Term Gerontology Orientation on Monday, September 26th, from 5 to 7pm in TCB107.

Course Specific Requirements:

This course requires the following textbooks: Person with Alzheimers Disease (Harris, 2002), and Care That Works (Zgola, 1999). Because this is an online course, I communicate with students via our D2L course and via email listed in the course class list and via michael.faber@pcc.edu. Check the Course Calendar for scheduled assignment dates and deadlines, and use either email address to let me know if/when we need to confer by telephone.
