- GRN175 Winter 2016 From the Instructor: The Aging Mind (GRN175) is now a two-credit course that explores the convergence of gerontology and recent brain science. The curriculum is intended to help today's older students from any field of study as well as tomorrow's gerontologists and care providers. Content includes an array of emerging approaches to engage, stimulate, and enhance older minds. We will also present examples of innovative, novel combinations of cognitive interventions that appear to have positive effects on aging brains. Tools will include 7-Day Brain Health Self-Assessment Charts. This course will include two live lectures that will be recorded and posted to the D2L course. The two lectures will be in TCB107 on the Sylvania Campus from 10 a.m. to 12:20 P.M. on Friday April 8, 2016 and Friday April 29, 2016. Attendance by students is NOT required but all registered students are welcome to attend. Both lectures will be recorded and made available for students to view on D2L the week following the recording of the lectures. Audit available.

- Course Specific Requirements: There are no prerequisites for this course and it is particularly designed to provide valuable brain health material for any older PCC student or instructor or person working with older adults. GRN175 incorporates breakthroughs from current research in the rapidly evolving field of Aging and Memory. We use two eTextbooks: Strong Brains, Sharp Minds (2015) and Better Brains by Design (2016) that are updated as needed. Both of these are available through online purchase by registered students during the first weeks of the course. In addition to providing a basic understanding of lifespan changes in the brain's structure and function, this course includes self-assessment assignments, research strategies and applying the learned material to real life challenges.
