9FA619S Bookbinding: Journals and Sketchbooks
Create two sturdy, flexible (soft-cover) journals or sketchbooks, using simple, low-cost methods. After a short intro to bookbinding fundamentals, you'll bind one small blank book to learn the process, and another of your own unique design.
The workshop will explore variations of the Longstitch binding: a versatile structure that lies flat when open (Longstitch books are traditionally bound in leather, but students may use an alternate cover material, such as vinyl.) In the first session, you'll use materials and templates provided by the instructor to create a small (approximately 3x5") blank book. At the end of the first session, you'll have time to begin designing your second book and ask questions about materials, which you'll purchase between sessions. During the second class, we will review concepts and skills as necessary. You'll create a reusable template for your book, and repeat the process for binding the books we created during the first week. Once you've mastered the basic structure, you can create longstitch books at home in a few hours, using tools and materials that are inexpensive and widely available. Supply list: Pencil, 12" or longer ruler, Small triangle or L-square, Table knife or letter opener, Sewing needles, X-acto knife (or similar). Optional, recommended supplies: Bone folder, Paper knife, Self-healing cutting mat, Awl.
