From the Instructor:
This Chemistry 106 online is designed to give the successful student an introduction to the language and concepts of organic chemistry and biochemistry completely from home. There is no on-campus component to this course, however, you may be asked to come to a campus or a prearranged testing center to take a quiz or the final. The students will follow the lessons, do homework, take examinations, and perform the laboratory assignments all from home. Expect to spend at least 20 hours per week studying and doing assignments and completing the lab and the lab reports for this class.

This course is designed for students in a health science program or a technology program. CH 106 is the third quarter of a year long sequence, CH 104, CH 105, and CH 106.

Texts & Materials
A. Required Text: Introduction to General, Organic, and Biochemistry 10th Edition by: Bettleheim/Brown/Campbell/Farrell published by Cengage Publishing
B. Required: online homework access code 'OWL'
NOTE: Purchase options for text and online homework access code: The text and the online homework access may be purchased online at www.cengagebrain.com; follow the steps below: step 1. click on 'browse catalog for Math and Science'; step 2. click on 'chemistry'; step 3. click on 'allied health chemistry'; step 4. scroll down to the Bettleheim (9th ed) text option and click on the title. This will send you to the order page with several options available. You may choose to purchase the echapters only. Scroll down to the 'Online Study Tools.' You will also need to purchase the one-semester online homework 'OWL' for CH 106. Note: If you already are registered for OWL you may switch your class.
C. Required: Scientific Calculator, you don't need a graphing calculator, but make sure that your calculator performs exponential notation and does logs.
D. Required: Lab Kit purchased through: http://www.labpaq.com
The price for the at home science lab kit will be approximately $150 the CK-106c, for returning online chemistry students (those that have a chem 104 or chem 105 lab kit). If this is your first chemistry online course you will be required to by the CK-106 lab kit at a cost of apporximately $200. Each student is required to purchase a new lab kit. Only the original purchaser is covered under the liability plan and to participate in this fully online chemistry class and do the labs at home, you must be covered. Be prepared to submit your purchase order number so that we can verify that you have a new kit. All labs will be done at home and there will be no need for you to come to campus. We managed to keep the price on this kit as you will be using some of the materials from your CK-105 kit.

This is the last course in the series. Chemistry 106 continues organic chemistry and transitions into biochemistry, the chemistry of life. A student taking chemistry 106 will study carbohydrates, proteins and fats or lipids as related to nutrition, metabolism and cell structure. The student will develop an understanding of drug structure will be introduced and amazed by the chemical structure of DNA.
