This Chemistry 105 DL is designed to give the successful student a continued introduction to the language and concepts of general chemistry, plus an introduction to the basic concepts of organic chemistry, completely from home. The students will follow the lessons, do homework, take examinations, and perform the laboratory assignments all from home.

This course is designed for students in a health science program and technology program leading to a baccalaureate degree or liberal arts students who need a laboratory science elective. CH 105 is the second quarter of a year-long sequence, CH 104, CH 105, and CH 106.

This course will be using Desire2Learn, our Learning Management Software at PCC that is used to deliver online courses.

  3. Required: Scientific Calculator, you don't need a graphing calculator, but make sure that your calculator performs exponential notation and does logs.

    • All labs will be done at home and it is not possible for you to come to campus to work on labs.

    • The labs should not be started until AFTER the course has begun, the lab report forms are only available in the D2L shell, and the labs relate directly to the content modules provided.

Overview of the three term series of chemistry 104, 105 and 106.

The student should plan on allocating about 20 hours per week to spend on this 5 credit lab course.

The chemistry 104, 105 and 106 series can provide the student entering the health fields a chemical background to support courses in physiology, pharmacology and general biology. A student beginning their health field programs with a full year of this GOB chemistry will gain the confidence and knowledge necessary to be successful in nursing programs, the medical lab tech programs, and in many other health related programs. Many nursing programs in Oregon have dropped chemistry as a requirement for admission; however, this is not the case for most programs across the country, including the State of Washington. This fundamental series prepares the student for general biology, physiology and the many aspects of dealing with environmental health issues.

Chemistry 104 is the first term in the series, which covers the basic concepts of atoms and molecules, and introduces the tools required for problem solving and related applications.

The next course, chemistry 105 continues building the fundamental concepts of mixtures and solutions, acids and bases, nuclear chemistry and introduces the student to organic chemistry. Also, in chemistry 105, the student will continue to build confidence with the problem solving tools so often used while working in the medical fields.

The last course in the series is chemistry 106 which continues with organic chemistry and transitions into biochemistry, the chemistry of life. A student taking chemistry 106 will study carbohydrates, proteins and fats or lipids as related to nutrition, metabolism and cell structure. The student will develop an understanding of drug structure will be introduced and amazed by the chemical structure of DNA. This 3 term process is designed to provide the student with an overview of the chemistry of life as it relates to the medical fields. It is highly recommended that chemistry 104 is followed with chemistry 105 and then with Chemistry 106.
