Covers drug and alcohol addiction among older adults, including prescription and other drugs and alcohol, used either alone or in combination. As tolerance to the effects of alcohol and other drugs decline, aging adults have higher risk factors. Addresses issues specific to aging, including late onset addiction, effects of use on performance of activities of daily living, treatment issues and co-occurring disorders such as depression or other chronic illnesses. - Aging and Addiction explores a continuum of engagement with alcohol, other drugs, and gambling (agent), as it impacts older adults (host), within various contexts (environment). The course is appropriate for anyone working directly with this population--from aides, to counselors, to medical personnel.
- Course Specific Requirements:
- In addition to assigned text and audio/visual study, a partial sample of graded activities includes 1.) posting weekly discussion posts and responses, 2.) taking a midterm, a final, and several quizzes; 3.) attending a mutual-help meeting; 4.) interviewing a behavioral health provider working with older adults; 5.) interviewing three older adults about behavioral health experiences. 6.) completing a scheduled telephone conference with the instructor.
