Patients present unique challenges for the phlebotomist. Age, morbidities and stage of disease will influence the draw. This course provides specialized phlebotomy techniques for difficult draws. We cover some anatomy and physiology, optimal choice of equipment, and personnel and patient safety. Attention will be paid to pediatric blood collections, geriatric draws, critically ill patients, those with vascular disease and scarring, edema or obesity and those at high risk of hemorrhage and other complications. Recent clinical, blood draw experience is required. Ideal student will have completed a formal course in phlebotomy.
