- Instructor: Christyn Dundorf Email: firstname.lastname@example.org Virtual Office Hours: Tuesday, 12 - 1 pm Hello! My name is Christyn Dundorf, and I'll be your instructor for this course. I've taught this course online for the past 11 years. Each time I teach it, I learn something new. This is my 14th year at Portland Community College. I came here from Portland State University where I worked at the Oregon Center for Career Development in Childhood Care and Education and coordinated a number of state level initiatives for early childhood educators (The Professional Development Registry, Early Words: a language and literacy training initiative, and a Statewide Mentoring Project). I have my Ph.D. in Human Development from the University of Rochester. My specialization is language and literacy development in early childhood (in particular, with children ages 3 - 5). I have worked in a number of early childhood settings including private day care and a demonstration Head Start center. I have two children (ages 13 and 16) and they provide me with many illustrative examples for my courses. I enjoy cooking and gardening as well as lots of outdoor activities. General Introduction about the course: This is a four credit, college transfer course which is offered via television and the Internet. This distance learning course enables the student to study the text on their own, view videos which provide examples of concepts studied and relate those concepts to life situations, and participate in on-line discussions and related activities. The course covers Child Development from conception through adolescence. We will be examining physical development, cognitive development, and social and emotional development. We will look at the ways in which developmental issues impact children's lives and the impact of environments (families, schools, communities) on development.
- Course Specific Requirements:
- Course requirements include viewing a 1-hour video segment each week, textbook reading (plan on 1 hour for each 10 pages of textbook reading), a weekly reading quiz, weekly developmental activities and on-line discussion of results, two integrative papers, and three exams (approximately 3 hours each). There are many advantages to such a course for the student who finds it difficult or inconvenient to participate in on-campus classes, although the necessity for involvement and participation is the same. The viewer must be an active college student who takes on the responsibility for independent learning and fulfillment of the course requirements from a distance. Taking an online course requires extreme discipline, sometimes students have the perception that an online course will be easy because there are no in class times. Students must realize that they will be spending at least 4 to 6 hours a week visiting websites, reading online course materials and articles, preparing and submitting assignments. As this course covers child development, students will need to have periodic access to children of varying ages to complete short developmental activities and two longer observation assignments. Assignments may include observation of and interaction with one's own children, relatives, children of friends and neighbors, children at your place of work, and so forth. The Child Development Centers at Sylvania and Rock Creek Campus are available for observation as needed.
