Examines the existence and attributes of God, faith, reason and mysticism, religion and science, religion and morality, religious language and life after death from the perspective of the philosopher. From the Instructor:
This is a comparative religion course, that develops a historical and philosophical view of nine of the world's great religious traditions: Indigenous/Native religions, Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Along the way we will discuss issues relating to: the value of mystical experiences, morality, scriptural interpretation, science versus faith, the existence of God, religious violence, relative versus absolute truth, and more. We will be reading a classic work in the area of comparative religion and philosophy of religion: The Worlds Religions, by Huston Smith. We will also be reading selections of scripture from each one of the religions studied in: Anthology of World Scriptures, by Robert Van Voorst.
