Distance Education: Web Course Information
- From the Instructor:
CIS 120 is the entry level class for CIS courses. It is focused on what is happening inside the computer and how other computer related systems work, such as, networks, the Internet, databases, components within the computer (RAM, CPU, etc.) and so forth. This is different than a basic software class where you learn a specific program(s) like the Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access). In this class, you will use those and other programs to accomplish various assignments. This will include learning to use a file transfer protocol (FTP) to upload to a server and to apply principles discussed regarding computer concepts.
Since this is an online course, much more responsibility will rest on the students to carefully read all online materials and instructions and to contact your instructor with any questions. Probably one of the most important words to remember is READ. Also, of course, is to regularly login and participate in the course. If you have questions, contact the instructor at email@example.com
- Course Specific Requirements:
Software that is needed: You will need Flash player and Adobe reader. Both are free and can be downloaded and installed. PC users: You will need Microsoft OFFICE SUITE (doesnt matter what version, but it is preferable to have at least OFFICE 2007 or later). It is recommended that you also have M.S. Visio (this will be available for download from a Microsoft website). Microsoft WORKS will not work for this class. Open Office can be used as well as long as it can meet the assignment requirements. Additional software will be downloaded from the Internet as part of assignment processes.
PC users should have at least MS Windows 7. If you chose to take this course on a Linux or Mac based PC support will rest on your shoulders. Be sure to have a back-up plan for when and if your computer is not working as it is not an acceptable excuse for not completing your work. Students may want to create a login for the campus Computer Resource Centers as a back-up computer source.
