PSY214 Introduction to Personality
Covers a variety of personality theories including the theoretical and scientific explanations for individuals' characteristic patterns of perception, thought, emotion and behavior. Emphasizes the understanding and mastery of personality constructs applied to students' personal and professional lives. Recommended: PSY 201A or PSY 202A. Welcome to PSY 214 Introduction to Personality!
This is a great class for psychology majors, counts as social science credit, and is a recommended course for the Nursing program.
This course covers personality theories including the theoretical and scientific explanations for individuals' characteristic patterns of perception, thought, emotion, and behavior. Incorporates activities which help students apply what they have learned about personality theories to their personal and professional lives. Recommended: PSY 201A or 202A Prerequisite: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores.
Analyzing behavior is something that all of us do regularly without really thinking about it--choosing a friend or a partner, choosing an employee/employer, selecting an instructor, etc. We will explore clues to personality, personality assessment, and using personality traits to understand (and predict) behavior.
The study of personality concerns individuality in human behavior patterns--thoughts, feelings, desires, intentions, and action tendencies--at a broad level.
We will discuss the person-situation debate about whether people do/don't have consistent personality traits. Personality psychology is the 'opposing' view from social psychology which focuses on situationism or how situational variables influence people's behavior more than personality traits. Personality psychology focuses on interactionism or how personality traits and situations interact with each other to influence behavior.

If you purchase the text used or elsewhere, please make sure you don't purchase Pieces of the Personality Puzzle instead. This is a great book too, but is a reader of original sources instead of the chapter textbook.
WaitlistThere are often questions about how the waitlist works and whether you're likely to get into the class from the waitlist. I can tell you that typically I'm only able to let in the 3-5 from the waitlist, but it depends upon whether students who are already registered in the course drop before the class starts. Not many students tend to drop once they've registered, but it can vary from term to term. I always let a few students in from the waitlist the first few days of the term. You will know if you've been added to the class from the waitlist as I will email you once I've requested it. I hope that helps.
Orientation to PCC Web Courses
Students must log into desire2Learn, complete the Orientation to PCC Web Courses, and other orientation tasks in the course no later than midnight on Wednesday 6.25.14 for summer so that students on the waitlist can be added. Those logging in after this time will be denied access to the course and will need to withdraw themselves in order to avoid tuition charges.

To login to your course, please go to: https://my.pcc.edu and click on the Desire2Learn login.
Click on 'Content' on the top navigation menu in desire2Learn (d2L) to access the weekly learning modules, discussions, journals, and tests. There you will find the Orientation and Syllabus Modules (includes the Calendar).
The main structure of this course will be the following:
1. Reading one-two chapters per week.
2. Responding to questions relating to the chapter via the online discussion board. You will be expected to contribute your own ideas as well as respond to the ideas of others in class. This acts as our 'classroom.'
3. Journal every other week relating to the chapter.
4. Quizzes every chapter (not cumulative or comprehensive)--no midterm or final.
5. Attendance/Participation is monitored by the amount of time you are logged into the class and your participation in the discussion board. Your success in the course will depend upon how much time you devote to study and your ability to manage time. In an online class, you are in control of the learning process and you have to be very motivated to keep up with the material and assignments. You will get out of the course what you put in so approach the class as a serious endeavor. If you are interested in the class because you think you will not have to work hard, this course is not for you. Online classes are structured so you may actually have to devote more time to the course than a traditional on-campus class. But your hard work will be rewarded with a deeper understanding of psychological concepts.
All communication for this course is through desire2Learn. This class moves along at a fairly good clip through the quarter. There are aspects of the course that are flexible, but regular student-to-student interaction via the discussion board is a large part of how we explore and apply the material.
Software, Hardware, and Plug-in Requirements
You will need to have access to a computer connected to the internet at least several times per week. Make sure you have a backup plan for potential computer/internet problems or outages. (I.e. the library, computer lab, friend, neighbor, work, or relative, etc.)
Be sure to have the following updated software installed on your computer:
-Adobe Acrobat Reader to read the online modules.
-A word processing program (save everything as '.rtf' (rich text format) prior to submission online.
If you do not feel comfortable doing any of these tasks please consider taking a face-to-face version of the course instead.
