- Welcome to CHEMISTRY 100 online! Taking CH 100 online is a wonderful solution for students who cannot fit an on-campus class in their schedule or who cannot come to campus. The lecture, recitation and lab are all completed at home and there is no need to come to campus. It is NOT possible to take the any of the lab(s) on campus while in this course. To succeed in this chemistry online class, you need to be able to set aside at least 20 hours a week to: read and study the topic modules and the text book do weekly homework assignments perform weekly laboratory assignments at home and writing weekly lab reports study for five 1-hour quizzes assigned every other week and the final have computer access to word doc or rtf programs and be comfortable with manipulating files by saving and attaching Have word processing skills that include making and inserting tables, pictures, etc. Taking CH 100 has the same content rich curriculum as the on campus equivalent, therefore you are expected to be a highly motivated self learner who can be responsible for your own schedule. This course does not work well for the student who is adding this class to a full schedule, and/or who works full time and has extensive family obligations. A common comment I hear from former students is that they thought this class would be easy! It is not necessarily easy because of the type of work (it is very mathematically based) and that you are learning it on your own. Of course you have support from your instructor and fellow students, but the bulk of the work must be figured out by you. In addition, this course is an expensive option: you need to purchase the following required items for the class: 1. a lab kit Lab Kit purchased through: http://www.labpaq.com/ Order the lab kit for chemistry CK-PCC-100. The price for the lab kit is approximately $169 without shipping. The first two labs do not require the use of the kit, so there is some built in time to order and receive it. Each student is required to purchase a new lab kit. Only the original purchaser is covered under our liability plan and to participate in this fully online chemistry class and do the labs at home, you must be covered. Be prepared to submit your purchase order so that we can verify that you have a new kit. All labs will be done at home and there will be no need for you to come to campus. Do not order the kit until you are sure you are ready to stay in the class because the restocking fee is high. *Note: Financial aid will not purchase the lab kit directly. You need to be able to pay for the lab kit up front and be reimbursed later. 2. the course textbook and Mastering Chemistry (online homework & tutorial program) Introductory Chemistry.Tro, Nivaldo J. Custom edition for Portland Community College. http://bookstore.pcc.edu/store2/CourseMaterials.aspx 3. a scientific calculator You don't need a graphing calculator, but make sure that your calculator performs exponential notation and logs.
