Survival Strategies for Testing Anxiety
Before the Exam
- If available to you, brush-up on skills that that will help on the test.
- You will concentrate better if you are well rested before coming to the test. Get a good night’s sleep.
- Eat a nutritious meal before the exam.
- A brief period of exercise could be useful for reducing stress or tension.
- Wear clothes that are comfortable on you. Don’t forget your eyeglasses if you wear them!
- Arrive 15 minutes early for the exam and allow yourself enough travel time so you won’t feel rushed.
- Before taking the test, clear your mind of other issues not relevant to the test.
- Develop a positive attitude. Tell yourself that you can do this and believe in yourself.
At the Exam
- Relax! Remember that these tests were designed to help you succeed!
- Carefully read all the instructions and directions.
- Read each question carefully.
- With multiple choice questions you can usually eliminate 2 or 3 answers that are obviously incorrect and then use your powers of reasoning to make the best choice.
- Use logic to help you answer difficult questions. Sometimes rephrasing the question into your own words can help you answer the question.
- Answer every question. There is no penalty for guessing. It is to your advantage not to leave any questions unanswered.
- Take your time. Make sure you are confident of your answer before advancing to the next question.
