What is Students4Giving?
Students4Giving Nate Allen and Elizabeth
Hoover with President Pulliams
In September 2007 Campus Compact and the Fidelity® Charitable Gift Fund announced an alliance to educate and inspire a future generation of philanthropists in a new era of giving. Portland Community College was one of five academic institutions in the nation to receive $15,000 to create a donor advised fund to offer grants to non-profit organizations within their communities.
This past year, the Portland Community College’s Students4Giving participants have accomplished the following:
- Spring participants in the new Introduction to Nonprofits and Philanthropy (BA208) course selected domestic violence as their focus topic and analyzed grants from 12 community organizations as part of their course curriculum. At the end of the term, three grant recipients were selected and received funding for a total of $10,000.
- During the winter term, 26 students in an introduction to accounting course reviewed youth grant requests for community projects and made their recommendations to the Multnomah Youth Commission. On March 18th, grants totaling $9,900 were given to seven youth groups at the Portland City Hall.
- During the fall term, 25 members of Students4Giving conducted an online fundraising auction as a voluntary service-learning project. This event, along with a campus textbook drive throughout the year, raised over $10,000 to sustain future grants.
