Program Overview

Students in Service is a Campus Compact AmeriCorps program that supports and promotes the engagement of higher education students in their community by offering Education Awards to those who participate in community service, service learning, or civic engagement activities. Students in Service members serve part-time while in college. They choose their own service site(s) and their own service schedule.

Students in Service members can serve in many ways that fit within any of the five focus areas identified by AmeriCorps: education, the environment, human needs, public safety, and community building. Appropriate service activities include but are not limited to: tutoring or mentoring in schools or preschool programs, participating in service- learning courses or certain internship/practicum programs, working with environmental projects or at community service agencies, serving as a service- learning coordinator on their campus, or a variety of other ways that are of personal and/or scholastic interest.

Terms of Service

The Students in Service program through PCC offers two term of service options:

  1. 450 hours of service, within one year (an average of 8 hours each week), offers a $1,250 education award.
  2. 300 hours of service, within one year (an average of 6 hours each week), offers a $1,000 education award.

Once a Students in Service member completes their term of service, s/he will receive an Education Award. You can apply the education award to qualified student loans or toward the cost of attendance at any Title IV higher education institution. Before enrolling in the program call your lender or higher education institution to determine if either accepts the AmeriCorps Education Award.
