District

Sarah Tillery, PCC District Service-Learning Program Coordinator, 971-722-4419

Sarah TillerySarah came to PCC from Washington University in St. Louis where she worked for three years in the Community Service Office.  Prior to her professional career in student services, she studied Women's Studies at the University of Maryland where she received her doctorate.  As an instructor, she believe in using alternative pedagogy to enhance her students' learning in the classroom and feels that service-learning is an incredible tool to unite the college with the community and the students with the course material.

Samantha Lee, Assistant Coordinator for Service-Learning, 971-722-4184

Samantha Lee Samantha graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2010 with my degree in media studies. In her studies there, she primarily used a critical feminist lens and this perspective continues to inform her general worldview. She is also interested in exploring the intersections of higher-education institutions and their surrounding communities. In 2010-11, she served in the Office of Service-Learning at PCC as an AmeriCorps VISTA and is excited about joining the college full-time to continue her work in Service-Learning and be part of the 50th Anniversary celebration in 2011-12.

Nicole Herbert, District Student Service Coordinator, AmeriCorps VISTA Member, 971-722-4414

Nicole HerbertNicole moved here from Chicago to pursue her MA in English at PSU. Before joining PCC, she mentored at-risk youth as an AmeriCorps State volunteer, where she developed a greater understanding of what it means to serve and contribute to a learning community. Nicole views service-learning as a methodology for social action, and an opportunity for personal and intellectual growth. She finds inspiration in bell hooks’ writings on holistic education and the practice of “engaged pedagogy.”

Southeast Center

Monica Christofili, Service-Learning Faculty Coordinator

Jessica LambFor five years I have lived in Portland, and for four of these I have taught at PCC where I am currently a temporary full-time RD/WR instructor for credit and DE classes and for Southeast Center’s Project DEgree program.  My B.A. in English from New Jersey's Rowan University and my M.A. in American Literature from San Diego State University were my trail toward Cascadia, but it really was my love of the otter that brought me to live in the Pacific NW. During stints at Rock Creek, the Hillsboro Learning Center, and Cascade campus, my belief in the untapped potential of my community college students and in their responsibility to know their community has become as dedicated and persistent as the Oregon moss I enjoy seeing on outdoor excursions. Most recently, my interest in civic engagement and my belief in the worth of service-learning in the classroom have led me to become my campus’ Service-Learning Faculty Coordinator.
